From the Vault: Nike SB Dunk Low “Brooklyn Projects”

A look back at the colorful and rare SB Dunk from 2009.

Mat DeSciora

Just when you thought we would run out of old school, dope-as-hell Nike SB Dunks to feature in our “From the Vault” series, the Nike SB Dunk Low by Brooklyn Projects “Halo/Zitron” lands in our inventory.

Released in super limited quantities at select Nike SB accounts and Brooklyn Projects in February 2009, the eye-catching colorway brings us back to the days when the Los Angeles based skate shop was dropping sweet collaborations with Rogue Status and The Hundreds. In other words, we couldn’t be more excited about giving the Brooklyn Projects x SB Dunk some love on our blog.

For those who don’t know, Brooklyn Projects was founded in Los Angeles in 2002 on the city’s famous Melrose strip. The shop’s name is inspired by its founder Dom DeLuca’s upbringing in Brooklyn, New York. Over the years, Brooklyn Projects has been a cultural hub, and the place where some of Los Angeles’s brightest artists, pro skateboarders, musicians, and more got put on. Brooklyn Projects’ status as one of LA’s most prominent retail stores earned it collaborations with top streetwear brands back in the day, and it counts projects with the likes of Slipknot and System of a Down as some of the bands it has worked with in recent years.

As for the Brooklyn Projects x Nike SB Dunk Low from 2009, the shoe features an interesting combination of colors and premium quality materials, not unlike some of Nike’s more wilder Dunk and SB Dunk colorways of late. Only the Brooklyn Projects version was released long, long before The Swoosh was releasing such colorways. Green leather is found on the toe, brown leather appears on the eyelets, and blue, slightly crinkle-textured leather is placed around the heel. The base is constructed in tan suede, while pops of yellow are seen on the Swooshes, interior lining, and laces. There’s no Brooklyn Projects branding anywhere to be found, but the sneaker has never needed any to stand out from the crowd.
